Question Of The Month: What Size Photos Does the Business Journal/WILMA Need For Ads?

Sponsored Content provided by The Inside Scoop - Marketing Newsletter, Greater Wilmington Business Journal and WILMA Magazine

We get this question A LOT, and it all comes down to the image’s dimensions and resolution. Here are the specs:

Business Journal

  • Primary ad image – 4” wide by 6” high (dimensions of image) at 300 dpi (resolution)
  • Secondary ad image – 2” wide by 3” high at 300 dpi

WILMA Insights (formerly advertorials)
  • Primary ad image – 4” wide by 6” high at 300 dpi
  • Secondary ad image – 2” wide by 3” high at 300 dpi
Headshots (head and shoulders photographs)
  • For Business Journal and WILMA: 2” by 3” at 300 dpi
So how do you check a file size for an image? If you are using a PC, right click on the file before opening it. A menu will open; select Properties. A second menu will open; select Details. You’ll see a list that includes both the image size and its resolution. If the information doesn’t match the specs listed here, the image quality and size are likely not good enough for our needs.

You may also see the image’s dimensions listed as pixels. Here’s a pixel to image converter, but a rule of thumb is 1 inch = just under 100 pixels.

A Few More Tips
  • Please don’t forward images from another email source. This can degrade the image’s quality. Instead, save the image to your computer and send it as an attachment.
  • Please don’t put images in a Word, PowerPoint or Publisher document. To extract them often requires that they be saved in a different format, which can reduce their quality.
  • Double-check your file extensions. Photo or image files typically have .psd, .pdf, .jpg or .tif extensions. Images prepared for the Web, which may be too small for print use, are typically .png or .gif files. Vector files, often used for logos, typically have .ai or .eps extensions.
We want your ads and images to look their best. If you have any question about these guidelines or need a short tutorial, please contact your ad representative.
