Variable Speed HVAC Systems

Sponsored Content provided by Jimmy Williams - Owner, O’Brien Service Company

Technology has come a long way in many applications in our lives. Your heating and air system is no different.

Variable speed HVAC systems have been around for some time now. However, the technology has recently become available in residential systems. If you are unfamiliar with variable speed HVAC systems, they are an impressive enhancement to heating and cooling systems. This article will explain their benefits.

How They Work

Installed, typical heating and cooling systems operate much like a light switch in your home - they are either on or off, with no in between.

This will cause short run times, which can cause drafts in the home, elevated humidity, and higher power bills.
Variable speed HVAC systems operate much like a gas pedal in a car, in that the speed at which the system is running is constantly changing with the conditions outside. If only a small amount of conditioned air is needed, that is all that will be produced.

Benefits of Variable HVAC Systems

Because the systems run for very long periods at low speeds, there is constant air flowing in the home, which helps to cut down on those stuffy spaces and cold drafts in the winter. The extended run times also remove more humidity than a typical system, providing a more comfortable space at possibly a higher set point. Additionally, because the system rarely operates at full speed, the energy savings can also be quite pleasant.

These are wonderful, systems when installed by a professional company. They do require a careful inspection of the home and duct work to ensure ducting changes are not needed. Never trust someone that doesn’t inspect the duct and provide a load calculation in writing before pricing an install.
