With Oversized AC Systems, Bigger Is Not Always Better

Sponsored Content provided by Jimmy Williams - Owner, O’Brien Service Company

When it comes to purchasing a new heating and air system, you have choices to make. There are different manufacturers, types of systems and efficiency ratings, for example. One factor regarding your new heating and cooling system that there should be no decision on is the size of the system.

The size of your new heating and air system is very important, and should not be “guessed” at by an HVAC company. Instead, a proper load calculation should be performed to accurately determine the size of the system that is necessary for your home. There are many variables that are taken into account, including the size of your home and the number of windows it has.

Purchasing a system without the knowledge that is provided by a load calculation can result in the installation of an oversized AC system, a mistake that has the potential to quickly drain your bank account.

Bigger AC Systems Can Cost More

The initial cost of a larger system can be significantly higher than other units. As an example, a 15 SEER Trane system that is two tons will cost less than a five-ton unit. It is unfortunate, but there are unscrupulous people and companies out there that will try to sell you a larger system just to make a few extra bucks.

The importance of taking proper measures to ensure a system is correctly sized to your home cannot be stressed enough. Another essential strategy to avoid having an oversized system installed is to have several different companies give you an estimate.

Oversized Systems Create Discomfort

The fact that an oversized AC system can cause comfort issues might sound illogical. Since air conditioning systems are designed to not only provide cool air but also to remove humidity, an oversized system can result in the home having a “sticky feeling.” This is because an oversized AC system will reach the desired temperature setting too quickly, then shut down. This might appear to be more efficient on the surface; however a system that only runs for a short period of time will be unable to effectively remove humidity from the air. This can negatively impact indoor air quality, cause moisture issues and increase the chances of mold growing.

Oversized AC Systems Wear out More Quickly

Cycling off and on too frequently creates extra wear and tear on an HVAC system, which can dramatically reduce its life expectancy.

Unless you want to replace your system every few years, it’s critical to install a system that is the appropriate size for your home. It would be unthinkable to buy a wedding dress or rent a tuxedo without visiting a tailor. The same idea applies to an HVAC system – it is essential to have a professional measure and evaluate your home so the system is accurately sized. To have a complimentary in-home evaluation from O’Brien Service Company, contact our office today.
