How To Prevent AC Repairs

Sponsored Content provided by Jimmy Williams - Owner, O’Brien Service Company

As the temperature gets warmer, your air conditioning system has to start working harder. This is when unwanted AC repairs arise.

As your system ages, sometimes these AC repairs are inevitable. However, there are some ways to help prevent them.

Here are some steps that can help you avoid that dreaded no cooling call in the middle of the summer.

Tips to Avoid AC Repairs

Maintenance. Having your air conditioning system properly maintained annually can greatly decrease your chances of needing any AC repairs. During the annual maintenance service, a technician can spot issues before they cause a need for major repairs. Also, the technician will clean major parts and clear the drain line, helping your system run at its best. Dirty parts on your air conditioner can cause more wear on your system, which increases the chances of needing repairs. So, do your air conditioning system a favor and make sure it gets proper maintenance. After all you’re going to depend on it all summer to keep you cool!

Filters. This seems simple, but you’d be surprised how much damage a dirty filter can cause. If your filter is completely clogged with dirt and debris, it can block the air from flowing through. This will cause your air conditioning system to run harder as it tries to reach your set temperature, even though it won’t be able to, since the conditioned air is being blocked. Be sure to change your filter regularly to help avoid AC repairs. Change them even more often if you have pets or someone who suffers from allergies.

Help your system. Your system is going to run constantly to maintain your set temperature if it’s 100 degrees outside. There are ways to help your system out so it won’t have to work as hard. First, if you have ceiling fans, you can turn those on to help you feel cooler. Also, by closing the blinds or shades you can help lower your indoor temperature by keeping the sunlight out.

Replace your old system. Now, obviously this does not apply to everyone. But if your system is more than 12 years old and constantly needing repair after repair, the best way to prevent more repairs is simply to have it replaced. It doesn’t make sense to throw all that money into a system if you don’t know how much longer it’ll last. Instead, purchasing a new, energy-efficient system will lower your chance of needing any AC repairs. Additionally, most new systems come with warranties!
