The New Hanover County Commission for Women has recognized Tamera “Ty” Young as the recipient of its inaugural Inspiration Award for being an example of empowerment and inspiration in the community, according to a news release.

Young, who announced her retirement in July of this year, is the second player from New Hanover County to be drafted into the Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA), the release stated.

“This is a really special day for our community, to recognize a woman who is an inspiration and role model for so many,” said Commission for Women Chair Sheila Evans. “Ty is the embodiment of what this award represents. She grew up here in New Hanover County and had big dreams and goals, and with her talent and drive she was able to achieve those. She is community-minded, dedicated, and I can’t think of anyone more deserving of our first Inspiration Award than her.”

Young is a 2004 graduate of Laney High School. Prior to joining the WNBA, she attended James Madison, where she was named to the All-CAA (Colonial Athletic Association) first team in three straight seasons.

Young was named CAA Player of the Year as a senior and set program records for career points and steals, among others.

Young was drafted in the WNBA by The Atlanta Dream in 2008. She spent the bulk of her playing career with the Chicago Sky after being traded in 2009 and played her final two seasons with the Las Vegas Aces. She retired from the WNBA after 12 seasons.
