The NFL could also learn about transparency from this local company. Its systems are open. A person’s performance targets are known. A person’s performance against targets is known. Meetings are open. The meeting organizer invites the people who it makes sense to involve. If someone else feels they should be included, then they can come too. The discussion is not top down. People’s input is sought and welcomed. In this type of organization you don’t have to remember what you said to the last person or at the last meeting. When you have nothing to hide there is no paranoia about what will be uncovered.
The local company’s third and final value is around teamwork and collaboration. This is an interesting one. You might think an organization like the NFL that is based on “teams” might excel in this area. Many of the NFL teams do and many don’t. What leads to exceptional teams in the NFL involves having superior talent, interdependence among team members, and a coaching or leadership group that can extract superior performance. While that seems like what you would expect from a Super Bowl champion, it also looks to me like the team that this local company is fielding. The difference may be that the local company does it in an environment of openness and consistent standards.
Can you guess who that company is?
