Coffee Shop Set To Build New Store In Midtown

By J. Elias O'Neal, posted May 21, 2013

Capitalizing on continued growth in the Midtown area, Dunkin’ Donuts has submitted preliminary site plans with Wilmington development officials for a new coffee shop in the area.

The Massachusetts-based national coffee retailer is planning to build on a 0.69-acre lot in the Village at College and Oleander development, located near the intersection of Oleander Drive and College Road.

Plans were submitted May 16.

Officials with Wilmington-based Cameron Management Inc. are currently leasing 13,500 square feet of retail space in phase two of the development at the busy intersection, which includes two outparcels fronting College Road and Oleander Drive.

Hill Rogers, broker-in-charge with the firm that’s overseeing tenancy for the development, said Tuesday that Dunkin’ Donuts would occupy the lot fronting Oleander Drive. He said a second unnamed retailer could file plans for the remaining lot on College Road in the coming weeks.

Plans call for the 1,800-square-foot store to include outdoor patio seating, a drive-thru and up to 12 parking spaces, according to preliminary plans filed with the Wilmington Development Services Department.  Officials also plan to preserve an oak tree that is 24 inches in diameter on the site and will provide extensive landscaping.

This is not the first time a national coffee maker has eyed the coveted Oleander Drive location.

Starbucks was given the green light five years ago to build on the same site, but scrapped its plans after the local economy tanked, Rogers said.

Dunkin’ Donuts operates more than 7,000 locations in 36 states, including five locations in Wilmington.
