Greeting Card Business Grows Into New Space Downtown

By Emily Mohorn, posted Jun 22, 2016
What started as a small, self-run, online business has blossomed into a national enterprise.

Taylor Hamilton sells pop culture-savvy, comedic greeting cards under her nickname, Tay Ham. Recently, she's taken the next step in her business’s growth by leasing a 1500-square-foot studio on North Fourth Street that serves as her company's headquarters.

“We just needed more space. Before, I was working out of an apartment [on Market Street] . . . and it was time to get a space where I can draw and ship cards while carrying out day-to-day business functions,” Hamilton said.

Before Hamilton created the business, she only made occasional, homemade cards after being disappointed by the selection in stores. She started with collages of different magazine clippings and matched phrases to the images.

Her creations garnered attention from friends and family, who started requesting her to make cards for them. This prompted the New York native to post her work on Etsy, and from there, her business grew.

Each card displays a witticism, celebrity or pop culture reference that the website calls the “best thing since sliced bread.” She has gained national attention from companies, such as NYLON and Urban Outfitters, and celebrities, including Kim Kardashian and Snoop Dogg.

Fast-forward a year, and Hamilton’s business continues to grow. In addition to leasing the space at 709 N. Fourth St. in The Brooklyn Building, Hamilton has five team members who help her with marketing, shipping and business development.

As far as future endeavors, Hamilton said she does not anticipate using the North Fourth Street headquarters for retail, but she may consider holding open houses.

For now, Hamilton said she hopes to see her business continue to skyrocket and has no intentions of leaving the Wilmington area anytime soon.
