StarNews Reports Layoffs At Publication

By Vicky Janowski, posted Mar 4, 2015
The StarNews reported it has laid off workers as part of larger job cuts for the group of newspapers recently sold to New Media Investment Group.

StarNews editorial page editor Tricia Vance was among those let go Tuesday. Vance, whose name was not on the masthead of the paper’s Wednesday edition, had been with the paper for decades and served as the editorial page editor since 2008. Besides Vance, two other full-time and one part-time employees in the newsroom, were let go, according to multiple sources.

StarNews officials did not respond to a request for comment Wednesday about the report or about the total number of layoffs at the publication.

The paper’s article Tuesday stated that an “unknown number of employees” were laid off and that details had not been made public. The reductions happened across the former Halifax Media Group, the article stated.

New York-based New Media in January bought the Halifax group’s assets, which included 36 newspapers primarily in the Southeast, for $280 million.

Prior to that, the StarNews belonged to the New York Times Regional Media Group before it was sold along with 15 other newspapers to Halifax in 2012 for $143 million.
