WHQR Earns News Awards

WHQR received various honors this year during the Radio Television Digital News Association of the Carolinas Award Ceremony on Nov. 11.

News Director Ben Schachtman said in a news release, "I'm incredibly proud of the team here at WHQR, and I'm grateful to RTDNAC, not just for recognizing our work, but for rewarding our attempts to do deeper, investigative and community-based reporting."

The first-place awards WHQR won were Outstanding News Operation; Community Impact for its series on adverse childhood experiences (ACES) by Rachel Keith; Consumer/Economic for "Ask a Journalist: Why is my rent so [expletive] high?" by Schachtman and Kelly Kenoyer; "'Stamped' out? The battle to remove an AP-English book from a New Hanover County school" by Keith; and Health-Medicine for "The Healing Place is not a treatment center" by Schachtman.

The station received second place in the Political/Election category for "Advocates say NC bill will hurt tenants, and could financially benefit its primary sponsor" by Kenoyer.

WHQR Public Media is a non-profit, member-supported, community-based public radio station broadcasting from Wilmington.
