Alyssa Grace, owner of Lyssa Cakes, will open the doors of her Mayfaire Town Center bakeshop this Friday, with carnival-themed sweets for all ages.

“Our opening will feature a lot of novelty cupcakes, which are cupcakes that look like something other than a cupcake,” Alyssa Grace said. “So for the carnival theme, we’ll have cupcakes that look like hamburgers and hotdogs, pizza and popcorn [pictured below].”

Grace said she feels her novelty cupcakes are something that will set her apart from other local bakeshops.

“It’s not something I’ve seen a whole lot of here in Wilmington,” Grace said.

Grace is also known for her novelty party cakes, crafted to look like designer purses, bags of money and bottles of wine, for examples.

While Grace said she does do some wedding cakes, she prefers party cakes with a theme.

She plans to have several types of cupcakes and celebration cakes in her display case each day, and will also offer a design-your-own cupcake option. Customers can pick their cake flavor, filling, frosting and toppings.

Grace will offer bottled drinks as well as coffee, including a vanilla cupcake coffee specially roasted for her by Java Estate Roastery of Hampstead.

Lyssa Cakes is at 980 Inspiration Drive and will be open from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Saturday and Sunday from noon to 4 p.m.
