Playa Bowls, a New Jersey-based company specializing in customized acai and pitaya (dragon fruit) bowls, will soon be open at Mayfaire Town Center.

Founded by Jersey Shore natives Robert Giuliani and Abby Taylor, Playa Bowls was inspired by Giuliani's and Taylor’s trips to surfing towns from Panama to Puerto Rico, each of which offered their own unique version of an acai or pitaya bowl.

While living above a pizza shop in Belmar, New Jersey, several years ago, Giuliani and Taylor made a deal with the owner that allowed them to set up a pop-up acai bowl stand outside the restaurant. They spent a lot of time telling their story and educating customers on the benefits of acai, a nutrient-rich berry that's high in antioxidants.

Now Playa Bowls operates 74 locations along the East Coast, with another 30 in development. Customers can build not only acai- and pitaya-based bowls, but bowls with blended banana, chia seed, coconut, kale or oatmeal bases, along with a wide variety of healthy toppings.

“With over 50 menu items, all customizable, there is something for everyone,” said Gary Moss, vice president. “All of the bases are dairy-free and we can accommodate all dietary needs. The bowls are a healthy, satisfying treat anytime from breakfast to a late night snack.”

Moss said Wilmington was a target market for Playa Bowls because it’s an active beach community that fits the company’s vibe. A mid-July opening is expected.
