Corning Inc. Submits Site Plans For Baghouse Project

By Christina Haley O'Neal, posted Jan 30, 2019
New York-based Corning Inc. has submitted site plans for a new development at its Wilmington site.

Plans submitted to the city of Wilmington on Tuesday show a proposed baghouse project at the Corning facility at 301 N. College Road, according to city records. A baghouse is generally definied as an air pollution control device that filters dust and particulates from the air.

The project is set to go before the city’s Technical Review Committee on Feb. 12.

The proposed size of the building, or baghouse, is more than 5,200 square feet. The development would have a .66-acre project area at the facility. The Corning Inc. site totals about 68 acres.

The Wilmington facility made the first optical fiber in the 1970s and in 2017, celebrated the delivery of its 1 billionth kilometer of optical fiber.

Officials with Corning Inc. would not disclose specific details Wednesday surrounding the construction at the Wilmington facility, citing competitive reasons.

“We are continuously innovating to serve our customers, employees and investors. As such, we routinely make updates to our facility to improve performance, footprint and quality,” Joe Dunning, spokesman for Corning. Inc., wrote in an email.

Conring Inc. released its fourth-quarter and full year earnings report Tuesday. The company reported an 11 percent annual sales growth and a strong fourth quarter.

"As Corning announced yesterday -- the Optical Communications division, of which the Wilmington facility is a part, exceeded $4 billion in sales for 2018 and is on track to surpass its goal of $5 billion in 2020 sales," Dunning said in the email.

Corning expects another year of growth in Optical Communications in 2019, according to the release.

Correction: This story has been updated to reflect that the first optical fiber was produced at Corning's Wilmington site in the 1970s.
