Brunswick Vying To Be Chosen For Tire Manufacturer's U.S. Operation

By Cece Nunn, posted Feb 23, 2016
In Brunswick County, the wheels have been turning again to bring a tire manufacturing facility – and the jobs that would roll in with it – to the area.

The county’s economic development director Michael DiTullo said Tuesday “it’s very, very early” in the process of potentially attracting the unnamed company. But the county has submitted a site with a Leland address – the Mid-Atlantic Industrial Rail Park at 4601 Andrew Jackson Highway NE – for consideration, according to the county’s response to a request for information (RFI).

The international company involved, dubbed “Silent Noise” in RFI documents, specializes in the advanced manufacturing of vehicle and aviation tires and is planning to create a U.S. manufacturing operation to support its existing North American customer base with associated national sales, warehousing and distribution activities.

DiTullo said the search for a site involves 10 states, and 60 to 90 sites are likely to make the first cut.

The company would invest about $458 million and create more than 1,000 jobs over a six-year period, from 2016 to 2022, according to an RFI description, with most jobs requiring skilled or semi-skilled employees. A large number of engineers will also be required.

“Silent Noise,” the RFI said, will initially require a 300-acre site to build a 1.3 million-square-foot facility to meet logistics, manufacturing and administrative needs. The second phase requires another 200 acres for expansion.

All utilities are available at the Mid-Atlantic Industrial Rail Park site, along with 279 acres for the first phase and 221 acres of adjacent land that could be used for an expansion, county documents show.

“Silent Noise” anticipates selecting a site by June this year and starting construction by September, according to a timeline included in RFI documents.

In previous years, Brunswick County was bypassed by companies that could have added 2,000 jobs – Continental Tire and Caterpillar. But the county’s Economic Development Department, formed last year, has recently been working with numerous prospects. Without naming specific companies, DiTullo described three of those prospects – two manufacturers and a craft brewery – in a report to the Brunswick County Economic Development Advisory Committee at the end of last year.
