More than 90,000 pieces of unwanted medication were collected at the New Hanover Regional Medical Center Medication Disposal Event held in March.
The free event encouraged the public to bring unwanted and expired medications to be disposed of in a manner that is safe for the environment. About 200 people attended according to the hospital.
Kathy Rawlings, RN Case Manager and Nurse Educator for the Outpatient Pharmacy, spearheaded the event.
“I became interested in this problem when I kept hearing about medicine in the water supply of cities all across the country,” said Rawlings in a press release.
“I think people recognize that there is a safety issue, but they’re just not sure what to do about it. This event empowered people to take action and make a difference.”
The next Medication Disposal Event is planned for Nov. 14.
