Editor's Note: Meeting Growing Needs

The Wilmington region remains in growth mode.

It’s evident when driving around town, shopping for housing or scheduling a doctor’s appointment.

On the plus side, more people attract additional retail options – case in point, read about Mayfaire’s growing mix here.

The growing population also is fueling the need for expanding medical services and facilities.

In this year’s Pulse section, we check in some of those expansions from the major medical providers in the area.

Construction, for example, is underway in northern New Hanover County at Novant Health’s new hospital and in downtown Wilmington at MedNorth’s facility. Wilmington Health recently marked the expansion of its endoscopy and surgery center. For more details about these projects and others, click here.

In New Hanover County, there is 1 primary care physician per 1,090 people, according to County Health Rankings data snapshot. That compares to the statewide ratio of 1,410 people sharing one primary care physician.

Some of those primary care physicians have chosen to into practice for themselves, even as health system consolidations have absorbed practices nationally for years now. Read about some of the challenges and reasons for remaining standalone from independent providers here.

The need for substance abuse treatment options also has been a growing issue for the region in recent years as the population has increased. Find out how facilities have addressed capacity to try and meet that need here.

And in an international expansion, Frontier Scientific Solutions is growing its capabilities for temperature-controlled storage in the pharmaceutical supply chain from its base in Wilmington and now in Ireland.

That worked earned them the Coastal Entrepreneur of the Year moniker this year. You read more about why and their upcoming plans here.
