A Wilmington entrepreneur’s software firm has been acquired by a global tech company.

Amped, a service for e-commerce direct-to-consumer companies, will be part of Intuit Mailchimp.

Matt Cimino founded Amped about three years ago. Amped's software helps companies create pop-ups that incentivize a website’s customers to sign up for text messages or email newsletters.

“It’s really all about creating a better experience for e-commerce businesses, to create a better experience to get their visitors to opt in,” said Cimino, who moved to Wilmington from Raleigh in 2023. “We did that by creating a platform that works more like Figma, which allows them to have full design control, and then some templates that are more fully designed and give them much better control than any of the other tools that are out there.”

Amped will continue to exist for three months, and then Amped forms will just be part of Intuit Mailchimp, Cimino said. Amped has about 15 employees, located in Wilmington, Raleigh and Greece.

Cimino did not disclose the financial details of the acquisition, but he did say, “It was a fantastic deal for everyone, and they're able to retain the entire (Amped) team.”

Cimino said one of the reasons Amped was able to attract Intuit Mailchimp was because his firm, which was on its way to 1,000 customers, serves major brands, including HexClad Cookware, soap brand Dr. Squatch and MrBeast Feastables snacks.

Technology firm Intuit bought Atlanta-based Mailchimp, a customer engagement and marketing platform, in 2021 for $12 billion.

Being able to attract that kind of company to a startup in North Carolina is a huge win for the state, Cimino said. He sees it as a win for the Port City too.

“Wilmington naturally attracts successful entrepreneurs who, either as full-time residents or part-time homeowners, help create a flourishing community,” Cimino said.
