An Athleta store is on its way to Mayfaire Town Center, according to a job notice on Gap Inc.'s hiring website.

Mayfaire officials confirmed the upcoming store in an announcement Tuesday, stating the Athleta is expected to open at 6807 Main St. in the former J. Crew space, next to Brixx Wood Fired Pizza, in the spring of this year.

“We are excited to welcome this in-demand brand to Mayfaire Town Center and the community,” says, Kurt Bohlman, general manager of Mayfaire, stated in Tuesday's news release. “It’s one of the top requested stores customers ask for and we are eager to bring this new to the market fitness apparel brand to Wilmington.”

Gap Inc. owns Athleta, a women's casual and athletic apparel brand that has been boosting the company's profits in recent years as other sectors in the apparel industry struggle.

News reports in 2019 stated that Gap Inc. has been expanding its Athleta brand while closing underperforming Gap and Banana Republic stores.

According to a September 2019 news release, Athleta, founded in 1998, had about 170 retail stores across the U.S.

National clothing retailer J. Crew closed its Mayfaire Town Center location last year. Locally owned gallery Going Local recently moved from the former J. Crew space to 890 Town Center Drive in front of the center's movie theater anchor.
