The Greeks Owners Plan Monkey Junction Location

A bitter downtown property dispute has ended with the announcement Monday that The Greeks will be relocating to Monkey Junction.

Yanni Papanikolaou, who co-owns the Greeks with his parents and sister, said they were advised by their attorney not to contest a recent eviction from their former location at 124 Princess St.

The restaurant closed its doors there on Feb. 11.

Contacted this week, the Papanikolaou family and property manager Tom Heitman, owner of Wilmington Commercial and Residential Real Estate, each pointed to the other in the 124 Princess St. eviction dispute with claims of requested building repairs and delays in rent payments.

In the meantime, Guil Hoff and Gene Jewell of Geno’s Pizza have since moved into 124 Princess St., and the Papanikolaous have signed a lease for 5120 S. College Road, Suite 107, formerly Sweet Frog frozen yogurt, in the plaza across from Wal-Mart.

Papanikolaou said diners can expect both dine-in and carry-out service, with the same menu as the former downtown location. An April opening is expected.

The Greeks opened a Jacksonville location last September, followed by an announcement of The Greeks Express to open at 4015 Market St. in Wilmington. But Papanikolaou said plans for that are now on hold as the family focuses on opening the Monkey Junction location as well as finding a new downtown location.
