Fermental will host its annual Mead Tasting from 6 to 9 p.m. Feb. 11 in honor of Valentine’s Day.

The event is designed to showcase a variety of honey wines, or meads, of different styles from around the world.

Mead is a beverage created by fermenting honey with water, sometimes with various fruits, spices, grains or hops. Historically, mead is thought to be one of the oldest alcoholic beverages known to man, according to Fermental owner Steve Gibbs.

“It was most likely discovered by accident while harvesting and storing honey,” Gibbs said. “The history of this beverage dates back 20,000 to 40,000 years and has its origins on the continent of Africa. Honey wine was believed to be the drink of the gods, and was thought to descend from the heavens before being gathered by the bees. Because of its spiritual associations, it is easy to see why ancient societies believed mead to have magical and sacred properties.”

Gibbs said the mead tasting event will showcase traditional meads alongside fruit blends, mulled varieties and a few modern interpretations. Information on the history and production of mead and its significance in in relation to vikings, literature, honeymoons and more will be available.

Wild Goat Food Truck will be on site providing a full menu of waffle based dishes, and guests will enjoy acoustic jazz throughout the evening.

Fermental is located at 7250 Market St.
