Castle Hayne can now boast of an authentic Italian eatery, with the opening this week of Broadway.

Oscar Berrios, formerly of New York, says Broadway specializes in Italian sandwiches, paninis and salads. A breakfast menu featuring omelets and breakfast sandwiches will also be served.

All of Berrios’ menu items are named after locations in and around New York City. Two of his favorites are the Brooklyn Heights, which is prepared with Italian sausage, broccoli rabe and mozzarella cheese; and the Voldostana, which is prepared with either breaded chicken or veal, Marsala mushrooms, shaved onion and melted mozzarella.

Each of the meals at Broadway can be prepared as a sandwich on a sub roll or wrap or as a platter with mixed vegetables and roasted potatoes. Two things diners will not find are pasta or pizza. Desserts such as homemade cheesecake and tiramisu will also be available, but no alcohol will be served.

The restaurant is designed for counter service as of now, but Berrios hopes to introduce table service in the near future. The 2,700-square-foot space seats 48 and has several additional counter seats.

Berrios and his family have been in the restaurant business for 25 years. After relocating to the area in September, he saw an opportunity to bring New York-style Italian dishes to Castle Hayne.

“It’s something you don’t see a whole lot of around here,” Berrios said.

Broadway, 2520 Castle Hayne Road, is open 6 a.m.-6 p.m. Monday through Friday; 6 a.m.-2 p.m. on Saturday; and closed Sunday.
