Greenlands Farm Hosts Dinner Series, Wine Events

Greenlands Farm in Bolivia will host a series of Homestead Dinners beginning next month and running through October. The dinners take place at the Greenlands Farmhouse which is home to both the Burkert and Kelley Families, who together practice homestead farming.

Henry and Heather Burkert purchased and began developing the Greenlands property in 2001. Their daughter, Maud Kelley, moved from the Charlotte area with her husband and family in 2012 to join her parents in developing the farm. The three generations live together on the farm and live off what the farm produces; working to be as self-sufficient as possible and practicing sustainability.

“This lifestyle requires a lot of hard work but it’s very rewarding,” said Maud Kelley. “We’re so happy to invite people here to share this space and learn more about what we do.”

Today Greenlands operates a CSA (community-supported agriculture), a bakery, creamery and café, as well as a petting farm comprised of mostly rescue animals. It hosts tours, parties and wine tastings as well as two types of homestead dinners. The farm also offers summer camps.

The Junior Homestead Dinner is designed to be a family event where children can roam the farm to see exactly how and where the food they’ll be eating is grown. Children also have the opportunity to interact with the farm animals and enjoy a hay ride. Junior Farmstead dinners are planned for Saturday, July 25 and Saturday, August 29.

The Adult Homestead Dinner features a gourmet five-course dinner prepared by a local guest chef as well as a tour of the farm. A visiting wine steward will pair several wines sold at the Greenlands Farm store with each course, and wines are available by the glass or bottle. Draft and bottled beer is also available. Details on each guest chef and their menu will be available via Greenlands Facebook page prior to each event.

The dates for the Adult Homestead Dinners are: April 24 and 25, May 22 and 23, June 27 and 27, Sept. 25 and 26 and October 23 and 24. Reservations are required for all dinners.

“The dinners replicate the way we cook at home,” said Kelley. “Although we’re not eating elaborate gourmet dinners every night, the meals are always centered around what we get from the farm.”

A menu from a dinner last June included lemon herb pimiento cheese in a lightly fried squash blossom; a pan-fried grits cake with local shrimp and tomatoes; tropical melon soup with fresh mint and purple basil; a salad of lemon squash with cucumbers and pickled purple string beans and prime cuts of organic, grass-fed beef, served with a wild mushroom popover and Swiss chard.

In addition to dinners, Greenlands will  host a Taste and Take Saturday the first weekend of each month beginning Saturday, April 4. For $5, guests can taste several wines alongside a seasoned wine consultant or for eight dollars they can enjoy several petite pairings of wine and food from the café. Reservations are requested for the pairing tasting. Customers will receive 10 percent off a case of wine and five percent off a half case.

On Saturday, April 18 from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m., Greenlands will host an event pairing wine with music. Wilmington resident and sommelier candidate Paul Obernesser has combined his love for wine and music into a program called Wine Comes Alive. He has selected wines that employ sustainable and organic practices for the Greenlands event and this special series will be known as “Down on the Farm.”
