Midtown coffee lovers will soon have a new option when it comes to feeding their caffeine addiction. Addicted To The Bean is slated to open in early September following renovations.

The location at 1207 S. Kerr Ave. has been home to two previous coffee shops within the past year. Java Kava opened last August and was then sold and took on then name Chillaxin Café in January, though the sign outside still reads Java Kava.

Jessica and David Winters, along with their partner David Martin, purchased the shop in July. They intend to make it a full scale coffee shop with a variety of healthy food options.

“We want to make things as healthy as we possibly can,” Jessica Winters said. “Our fruit smoothies will be 100 percent fruit; we’ll serve non-GMO oatmeal - things like that.”

Winters says that her new cafe will source its coffee from Java Estate Roastery in Hampstead and that she and her partners are in the process of selecting several local bakers to supply their baked goods.

This will be the second Addicted To The Bean location for the Winters and Martin, who have operated one in Madeira Beach, Florida for the past six years.

“Our vision is that this will be a place for UNCW students to come and study and hang out,” Jessica Winters said. While the cafe will initially be open seven days a week from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., the owners are open to extending evening hours if students express interest. Addicted To The Bean will offer student discounts and some other promotions upon opening.

Interior design work for the 2,000-square-foot space is being coordinated by Jessica Winters’ cousin Robby McKeithan, who is head designer for the CBS series Under The Dome.

“It will have a modern, urban feel,” she said. “We want people to really feel at home here, to really feel like it’s their space.”
