New Senior Housing, Storage Facility In The Works

A 72-unit senior housing development bordered by Alex Trask and Holland drives and a self-storage facility on Carolina Beach Road are the subject of upcoming community meetings in New Hanover County.

New Beginning Christian Church wants to build 18 quadriplexes, for a total of 72 units, in a senior housing community called The Covenant on land that received a conditional rezoning in April, according to a letter to adjacent property owners from Cindee Wolf, a land planner who owns Design Solutions.

Changes in New Hanover County’s Comprehensive Land Use Plan, Wolf explained, have made it possible for the church to pursue a special use permit for a higher-density project. The April conditional rezoning involving the property allows 46 single-family homes.

The 72-unit proposal would require county officials to approve a special use permit in a conditional use district, Wolf said.

A community meeting, as required by the county, will be held 6-7 p.m. Oct. 24 at New Beginning Christian Church, 3120 Alex Trask Drive in Castle Hayne.

The community meeting for a separate project, a climate-controlled self-storage facility at the corner of Carolina Beach and Radnor roads, will be held 6-7 p.m. Oct. 25 at Inlet Watch Yacht Club clubhouse, 801 Paoli Court.

Wolf is also representing the developer of the storage facility in making the conditional zoning district request to the county.

“This parcel is currently approved for a mixed-use project, which includes a 3-story structure with 90 apartments and 2500 s.f. of commercial space. We believe that a storage facility in this location would be a better use for the property and seek to modify the previous zoning approval,” Wolf said in a letter to adjacent property owners.
