Plans Show New Retail, Business Expansion In Pender

A new retail development in Hampstead and a planned warehouse for a Rocky Point trucking firm are being proposed in Pender County.

The sites were among major proposals addressed Wednesday by Pender County’s Technical Review Committee. Pender County Planning Director Kyle Breuer said Wednesday afternoon that nothing has changed with the development plans following the meeting.

County records show applications for both developments were submitted to Pender County’s planning division in late December.

Alan Baxley, owner of Alan Baxley Inc., 292 Complex Road, submitted a proposal requesting approval for the construction of about 5,000 square feet of warehouse space for the operation of the general freight trucking firm.

The development is being proposed for 10 acres along Complex Road near the intersection of Carver Drive in Rocky Point. The property is directly across Complex Road from the company's existing facility, according to county documents.

Separately, a retail development is being proposed by Hampstead Investment Co., both the project applicant and owner, for construction of a four-unit commercial building for a drive-thru restaurant and other retail and commercial businesses.

No tenants have been identified for the project, according to county documents.

The mixed-use development consists of a 6,300-square-foot building with two 1,750-square-foot units and two 1,400-square-foot units. County documents state the project is proposed to be completed in one phase.

The property is located north of Hoover Road and U.S. 17 adjacent to a N.C. Farm Bureau Insurance facility in Hampstead.

Breuer said the projects are still in the early stages and will be able to move forward once all necessary permitting has been obtained to meet zoning approval.

Another commercial development was proposed for the Hampstead area late last year with plans to bring about 83,000 square feet of building space for light industrial use and several outparcels for future development. The project, called the Highlands Business Park, is eyed for 13 acres on the west side of U.S. 17, north of Christian Chapel Road across from Whitebridge Road.
