Academy Sports Expected To Open Large Store Off Market St.

By Cece Nunn, posted Feb 1, 2017
In a first for Wilmington, Academy Sports + Outdoors plans to open a 62,000-square-foot store off Market Street, a broker said Wednesday.

The national sports, outdoor and recreation retailer is leasing the planned building in what will be an expansion of S&H Centre in the 5300 block of Market Street. The center property currently includes Costco, Olive Garden, Jason's Deli and Eyemart Express.

The new Academy Sports + Outdoors is planned to be built at the corner of Lennon and Gingerwood drives in front of Costco, said Nicholas Silivanch, vice president of retail, leasing and sales of Wilmington-based Eastern Carolinas Commercial Real Estate.

“It’s a build-to-suit, long-term lease” for an undisclosed amount, said Silivanch, who represents the owner of the property, S & H Centre Development Corp.

In November, Academy Sports opened stores in Greenville and Jacksonville in buildings of the same size. The stores carry hunting, fishing, sports, recreation and leisure products, along with footwear, apparel, patio sets and barbecue grills, according to the firm’s website.

A $4.6 billion company, Academy Sports operates more than 225 stores in the U.S. and is based in Texas, the company’s website says.

In Wilmington, the S&H Centre expansion plan, currently under review by city officials, also includes an additional building.

“We’re working on another 20,000-square-foot junior box tenant to co-anchor the new square footage,” Silivanch said. “We’ve had several people that are interested and are reviewing Wilmington’s marketplace for the 20,000-square-foot opportunity.”

Efforts this week to reach a representative with Academy Sports + Outdoors for more details about the new store were not successful. The company has posted a job description seeking a director for the Wilmington store online, on LinkedIn and the company's site.

Sportsman's Warehouse, a publicly traded (Nasdaq: SPWH) seller of outdoor recreation apparel and gear, is expected to open its doors at 4715-A New Centre Drive in Wilmington this year, with potential employee interviews scheduled for later this month, according to the company's website.
