Affiliated Firms Move From Princess Street Location

By Cece Nunn, posted Jul 23, 2014
With the aim of being closer to what he considers the heart of the area’s real estate industry, Robert Calder moved his law firm in June from downtown Wilmington to a new space near the intersection of Eastwood and Military Cutoff roads.

“It is the center of real estate activity in New Hanover County right now, and we’re a real estate firm, so it made sense to us,” said Calder, an attorney and manager of Calder Law PLLC, which is now located in a 1,845-square-foot office at The Atrium, 1410 Commonwealth Drive, Suite 205.

The firm previously shared space at 611 Princess St. with a title agency that used to be part of Calder Law, as well as the firm’s former bankruptcy division.

The title agency, Atlantic Land Title Agency Inc., is managed by Robert Calder’s brother Keith Calder, who moved his premises to 311-4B Judges Road in June.

“With the downturn in the economy and the significant drop in business, the office downtown had become much larger than we needed,” Keith Calder said of the 4,200-square-foot space on Princess Street. “I needed a different kind of space than Robert.”

The brothers own the property at 611 Princess St., which is listed for sale by Creative Commercial Properties with an asking price of $635,000.

Keith Calder wanted an office where he could meet with clients but also store more than 60 years’ worth of title notes. At $1,000 a month for 1,200 square feet that includes warehouse space with air conditioning and heat, the Judges Road location fit the bill.

“I have a nice-looking office with my art and my memorabilia around me, and it’s very comfortable,” Keith Calder said.

Chuck Lydon and Lee Weddle, both of Coldwell Banker Commercial Sun Coast Partners, represented the landlord for Keith Calder’s lease. In the case of the Calder law firm space at The Atrium, Lydon and Weddle represented the firm, while Teresa Huffmon, also of Coldwell Banker Commercial Sun Coast Partners, represented the landlord.

“We’re extremely happy to be in this location,” Robert Calder said. “I’ve gotten several closings from agents that I don’t think would have brought them to me if they’d had to take their clients all the way downtown to do the closing. I’ve already seen an increase in business because of the location.”

A bankruptcy division formerly affiliated with Calder Law PLLC also relocated from 611 Princess St. to a different downtown address, 107 N. Second St., Suite C.
