A need for more space to accommodate a growing membership helped inspire CrossFit Coastal owner and head coach Ezekiel Martinez to lease a bigger building on Market Street.

Housed in the former Britt Motorsports service facility, CrossFit Coastal now has 6,000 square feet at 6418 Market St. in which to train members using a variety of movements pulled from different sports activities, including gymnastics, power lifting, football practice and track and field.

The former space, at 5726 Market St., was 2,800 square feet. As well as room for more members, CrossFit Coastal’s new location comes with heating and air conditioning and two acres for outdoor events and workouts.

Bryce Morrison of Cape Fear Commercial represented CrossFit Coastal in the lease of the new building. Martinez’ gym is one of six CrossFit affiliates in Wilmington, according to CrossFit’s website. Another CrossFit affiliate is located in Leland.

Martinez said CrossFit Coastal started small.

“We taught classes at Hugh McRae Park armed only with a couple kettlebells, some tires we got for free and some used barbells,” Martinez said.

From there, the business moved to Gordon Road Station, staying there for about two years before relocating to its first Market Street address.

CrossFit Coastal will hold a grand re-opening celebration beginning at 10 a.m. Sept. 6, at its new Market Street spot, with a cookout, refreshments, demonstrations and workshops to let members of the public know more about what they could expect as members.

Current members are happy about the changes, Martinez said, especially the air conditioning and heating. With this lease, the business, which has 250 members, can accommodate 400 members, he said.

Another fitness facility, a trampoline gym chain with locations in Durham, Raleigh and Charlotte, bought the 23,000-square-foot Britt Motorsports building at 6431 Market St., across the street from CrossFit Coastal, in June. Called DefyGravity Wilmington, that business is expected to open in early 2015.
