A $25.5 million project years in the making will soon take shape at The Davis Community later this month.
Trustees, residents and administrative officials associated with the community, located in the Porter’s Neck region of New Hanover County, gathered Tuesday morning to break ground on the multifaceted project.
Officials with the Wilmington division of Monteith Construction anticipate clearing land on the 50-year-old campus by the end of the month with construction starting in July.
Plans call for many of the hospital-like, long hallways to be transformed into seven new 11,500 square foot household cottages — each equipped with 20 rooms from within the existing facility for residents.
Two new 10,500-square foot stand-alone cottages — called the Walker Taylor III and the Sinclair-Hogue House in recognition of three long-time supporters of The Davis Community — will also be constructed on the 54-acre campus.
All the redeveloped and new cottages will be equipped with a kitchen, dining and living rooms and an activity center to anchor each household.
Officials plan to undertake the large construction and redevelopment project in five phases over a 42-month timeframe. The completion date is slated for September 2015.
