Corning Inc. Announces RocketRibbon, A New Optical Fiber Product

New York-based Corning Inc. (NYSE:GLW) announced on Friday its latest optical fiber cable product, one that officials with the company said uses optical fibers made in Corning’s manufacturing facilities like the one in Wilmington.

Corning’s RocketRibbon is touted by the company as a next-generation ribbon cable, which “enables up to 30 percent faster installation than other high-density ribbon cables designed for data center and carrier environments,” according to a news release.

“This an exciting new product that benefits our customers and Corning, including our manufacturing locations and our employees,” Joseph Dunning, Corning's communications manager, said in an email.

The new product is suited for Data Center Interconnect applications and other emerging network needs such as 5G, according to Corning’s website on the product. 

When asked about the product’s impact on local investment and jobs at the fiber optic facility in Wilmington, Dunning said Friday that there is nothing to announce at this time. The company does not release local employment numbers, citing competitive reasons.

RocketRibbon cable allows operators to quickly install more capacity in the same duct space to accommodate increased bandwidth demand, officials said in the release. Officials said the new cables deliver up to 3,456 fibers in the same diameter as existing central and stranded tube cables. The new product is also offered in 1,728 fibers, Dunning said.

Along with the greater fiber density, the design of the product makes its fibers “easy to manage, identify, and trace,” which officials said improves installation times and lowers maintenance costs.

“RocketRibbon extreme-density cable demonstrates how we work hand-in-hand with our customers, listening to their challenges. In this case, we developed an entirely new system of ribbon protection and sub-units that provide our customers with easier, faster cable access for ribbon identification and splicing,” Bernhard Deutsch, division vice president and general manager of Corning Optical Fiber and Cable, said in the release.

“RocketRibbon extreme-density cable is another example of how Corning is investing in innovations that help our customers reduce total cost of ownership by increasing deployment speeds and improving network performance,” he added.
