One Saturday each year, the U.S. Department of State gives a break to working folks who need to apply for a passport.
The national outreach event, called Passport Day, provides passport application services for those who can’t necessarily make it to a passport office during the Monday-Friday workweek.
This Saturday, March 10, the University of North Carolina Wilmington will host its Passport Day event from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Warwick Center to provide passport information to U.S. citizens and to accept applications.
Those planning to apply at the event will need to bring a certified copy of their certificate issued from their birth county’s office of vital records. Applicants will also need personal checks to cover the cost of the application ($110), processing cost ($25), and a passport photo, if needed ($10 plus tax).
Nowadays, any travel outside U.S. borders usually requires a passport. U.S. citizens must present a valid passport book when entering or re-entering the country by air. Citizens entering the United States from Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean and Bermuda at land borders and sea ports of entry must present a passport book, passport card or other travel documents approved by the U.S. government.
For further information on how to apply for a U.S. passport, visit www.travel.state.gov. Information can also be obtained by phone (English and Spanish), by calling the National Passport Information Center at 877 487-2778.
For more information on Passport Day, contact Sandra Marshburn in the UNCW Office of Auxiliary Services at 910 962-2008.
