WHQR Buys Its Downtown Space

By Vicky Janowski, posted Jun 13, 2014
The nonprofit associated with WHQR Public Radio is purchasing the station’s downtown space, officials announced Thursday.

David Zumbro, chairman of Friends of Public Radio Inc., licensee of WHQR, signed the purchase agreement Thursday, buying the space from Hexagon Holdings Inc., according to a news release.

Station officials did not disclose the purchase price, and the information was not immediately available through New Hanover County’s online tax records.

The deal is expected to close Aug. 31.

WHQR had been leasing the third floor of the Warwick Building, 254 N. Front St., in downtown Wilmington for its office and broadcast facilities, according to a news release. The station, which takes up the entire floor, moved to the building in 1994.

“It is a huge step forward for WHQR that will reduce WHQR’s annual operating costs, give us a permanent asset and allow us to control our own destiny,” station manager Cleve Callison said in a statement.

He credited support for the station’s capital campaign, which started in 2012 and is still ongoing, with making the purchase possible.

“Recently the board, noting the fiscal health of the station and a favorable real estate market, approved adding a facilities purchase to the campaign goal,” Callison said. “This is a true milestone in the history of WHQR, and a perfect expression in our 30th year of our intent to improve WHQR and all its services for the benefit of our listeners."
