Some businesses start on the back of a napkin, others are born in boardrooms and some apparently begin in the quiet moments of a child’s nap.
Four years in the role of stay-at-home dad gave David Frederiksen some time to ponder his role in his children’s life and how different generations of fathers have interacted with their children.
A writer by trade and currently a member of New Hanover Regional Medical Center’s internal communications staff, Frederiksen launches a new online magazine this month that seeks to tell the stories of Cape Fear dads.
Cape Fear Dad will start as an online-only magazine while Frederiksen and his team gather a following with the dream of becoming a print publication next summer. He said he hopes to publish three times a year in print and update online “constantly.”
Frederiksen said the publication will be full of stories about and for local dads. The publication will include stories on fatherhood, finance, health and education, feature portraits and even a section on fun things to do.
“The impetus for this magazine came from my experience as a stay-at-home dad, a position I relished, but one that also created in me a great deal of angst,” Frederiksen said in a release about the launch of the publication. “‘What does it mean to be my child’s primary caregiver?’ ‘What does this say about me as a man, and what will other men say about me?’ ‘How do I compare with my own father?’ – these questions were a constant preoccupation of mine.”
The new publication can be found at www.capefeardad.com.
