Local Nothing Bundt Cakes Locations Change Hands After Nearly 10 Years

After nearly ten years, the owners of the Nothing Bundt Cakes franchise locations in Wilmington and Leland are selling the businesses.

Cat and Greg Marinich, a husband-and-wife team, are selling both locations to TreeHouse Foods PB LLC, a subsidiary of Florida-based TreeHouse Capital investment group. The sale closed on Tuesday, according to Cat Marinich.

The Marinichs opened the Wilmington location of Nothing Bundt Cakes at 1437 Military Cutoff Road in 2017 after living and traveling overseas during Greg Marinich’s career as an Army officer.

“We did know that our definite goal was to have something of our own, to build a little business,” Cat Marinich said on Friday, “We had no idea it would be a franchise.”

Cat Marinich said the brand’s values and overall success drew them to Nothing Bundt Cakes, a bundt-cake-only bakery franchise. According to the company's website, the franchise started in 1997 and now has over 600 locations.

“We were very comfortable in our roles, to build teams and have great leadership,” said Cat Marinich. “Greg’s an incredible leader, and it just really fit us, and we just loved it.”

The couple opened a second location in Leland’s Waterford Shopping Center in 2024. The simplicity of the business model, in addition to corporate support and communication, made running the two bakeries “a piece of cake,” Cat Marinich said. Careful planning and corporate guidelines usually resulted in little to no food waste, she said.

Now, after owning and operating the stores for nearly ten years, the couple says it’s time for a new chapter – they plan to retire, Cat Marinich said.

When it came to choosing a potential buyer for the business, Cat Marinich said they were “very picky.”

“We wanted to make sure they would take care of our people,” she said, “and we just needed to feel that their values were kind of similar to ours, and we found that.”

According to a company spokesperson, TreeHouse Foods PB LLC is a leading Nothing Bundt Cakes franchisee with multiple locations in North Carolina and the Midwest.

According to Cat Marinich, the company's leaders are "true believers in the brand," and plan to keep the same staff and management teams at both locations.

“We absolutely have loved our 10 years in the brand and getting to know everyone in Wilmington,” said Cat Marinich. “It has been such a joy, such a rewarding experience.”

Correction: The article was updated to correct the name of TreeHouse Capital Group.
