On September 30, 2025, innovators, researchers, entrepreneurs, and ocean advocates will gather for the Ocean Innovation Conference, a full-day event dedicated to exploring the future of ocean technology, sustainability, and collaboration. Running from 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., the conference will feature thought-provoking discussions, networking opportunities, and two keynote speakers who bring global perspective and inspiration to the stage.
Morning Keynote: Deborah Westphal
Kicking off the day, Deborah Westphal, Author and Executive Advisor at The Karen Toffler Charitable Trust, will deliver the morning keynote. Westphal is no stranger to Wilmington’s blue economy conversations. A few years ago, she conducted a series of interviews with regional stakeholders to better understand the opportunities and challenges facing coastal innovation and sustainability. With over 30 years of experience working across government agencies, Fortune 100 companies, and organizations around the globe, Westphal has established herself as a leader in helping decision-makers navigate uncertainty and shape resilient futures. A passionate humanist and lifelong learner, Westphal was one of the founding members of Alvin Toffler’s renowned consulting firm. She has dedicated her career to guiding leaders in challenging assumptions, fostering new ideas, and building meaningful connections that support sustainable, secure progress.
Luncheon Keynote: Shaun Tomson

At lunch, attendees will hear from Shaun Tomson, World Surfing Champion, best-selling author, entrepreneur, and leadership expert. Drawing from both his athletic career and business ventures, Tomson will present his transformative Code Method, a framework designed to inspire resilience, engagement, and purposeful leadership. Tomson has shared his message with organizations such as Google, Disney, and General Motors, blending personal storytelling with strategies that empower individuals and teams.
Beyond his speaking career, Tomson, an entrepreneur himself, has founded two global apparel brands, authored three best-selling books, and earned a Master of Science in Leadership. His keynote at the Ocean Innovation Conference will leave attendees energized, equipped with tools to build resilience, and inspired to lead with authenticity and purpose.
Looking Ahead
With Deborah Westphal setting the stage in the morning and Shaun Tomson energizing the afternoon, the Ocean Innovation Conference, promises a day of fresh ideas, inspiring stories, and meaningful conversations. Attendees can expect to leave with new insights, connections, and motivation to advance innovation in ocean sustainability.
