Closets for Area Kids – and Some Extra Special Ones at That!

Sponsored Content provided by Fred Kumpel - Owner, Strickland's Home

As a locally-owned business for over 75 years, Strickland’s Home loves giving back to the community. While our closet organization clients are often adults looking to upgrade their master walk-in or reorganize their kitchen pantry, we also spend plenty of time organizing children’s closets, too.

Kid-friendly closets come with unique design considerations, and for children with special needs, there are even more adjustments to be made. For this reason, we’re happy to provide custom-designed closets for children who most need them. Here are a few of our most recent community-focused projects we’ve done to help kids in the Port City.

A Closet for Williston Middle School

The Williston Middle School Student Closet gives students access to school uniforms, clothing, classroom supplies, personal care items, and alarm clocks to fuel their academic success and well-being. While the closet was filled with necessities, it was in need of better organization solutions — supplies were piled in storage containers and cardboard boxes. In partnership with the Rotary Club of Downtown Wilmington and Haywood Lineberry of Lineberry Painting, we gave the student closet an extreme makeoverOur team installed hanging rods for t-shirts organized by size and color; shelves of shoes, shirts, and pants; and another shelving unit for alarm clocks and school supplies. With this project, we were happy to provide some peace and organization to Wilmington’s young students.

A Closet for Grayson

Born with a genetic abnormality, eight-year-old Grayson Allen struggled with balance, muscle development, and sensory overload. This made it difficult for him to relax and fall asleep in his own bedroom. Welcome Home Angel, a nonprofit organization that provides bedroom makeovers for children with chronic or debilitating illness or injury, stepped in to redesign Grayson’s room to better suit his needs. As a project partner, Strickland’s Home created a streamlined, simple closet design to help keep Grayson’s space soothing and calm.

A Bed for Riley

Riley came into the world with significant developmental delays due to an infection before birth. As a result, she uses a walker and wheelchair and requires handicap-accessible spaces, as well as a customized bedroom, bathroom, and therapy/playroom. In partnership with Welcome Home Angel and many other local businesses, Strickland’s Home helped provide a deeply-discounted custom Murphy Bed and shelving to organize her playroom.

$5,000 for the Make-a-Wish Foundation

Recently, we partnered with the Make-a-Wish Foundation of Eastern North Carolina to auction off a $5,000 Strickland’s gift card toward any OrgHome closet system. The winning bidder received a closet design by our lead designer Ginger Thorton, a selection of OrgHome organizational systems elements, professional installation, and an organizing session with Lydia Fields of Seaside Styling and Organizing. Make-a-Wish will use these funds to granttransformative wishes to children battling critical illnesses.
