As a professor, Fox helps prepare teachers for literacy work in K-12 schools. She recently received the 2022 UNCW Board of Trustees Teaching Excellence Award.
“The teaching profession has embraced technology for decades. In the more recent past, we have included technology as an outreach method to children and families for education and communication,” she said.
Fox is a fan of online news feeds, such as HuffPost. Her weekly fiction fix is from The New Yorker magazine.
“My undergraduate education students just did a review of children’s ‘edutainment’ websites. Their criteria were that the websites were easily accessible, free to parents and educators, and offered information to support interactive literacy. Winners from these tech-savvy preservice teachers were pbskids.org, Flocabulary.com and Starfall.com.”
Favorite podcasts include Poem-a-Day from Poets.org for waking up to a new poem every day, BBC World Book Club to get inspiration and The Splendid Table for its very doable recipes.
Favorite TV shows are Wheel of Fortune, Jeopardy! and Masterpiece Theatre. “A good British mystery is also a favorite.”
A movie she recommends is Head Full of Honey. “It’s a touching story of aging starring Nick Nolte with his young granddaughter playing the same character in the movie.”
