Jhaniqua Farrar Palmer

Outreach programs director,
YWCA Lower Cape Fear

YWCA Lower Cape Fear helps equip women in the community with digital skills to be successful in the workplace through its Strive Curriculum.

Magazines she regularly reads include National Geographic. “It is one of my favorite magazines. I love whales and thinking about the environment.” She also enjoys Essence. “It is all about Black Girl Magic!”

Palmer’s favorite podcast includes Crime Junkie. “It is the details of the story and how the logistics come together to solve mysteries.” As well as The Love Hour Podcast.

A favorite book is “Eloquent Rage” by Brittney Cooper. “

It changed how I felt about myself as a Black woman who deeply cared about other Black women and about the world that is often harmful to our bodies,” she said. “I felt empowered, heard, understood and validated in my anger towards injustices while being motivated to not give up the fight.”

Her favorite authors include Francis Ray and Octavia E. Butler.

“Ray turned me into a reader. Her love stories are dynamic and captivating. Butler allows me to explore my apocalyptic and sci-fi interest.” Favorite movies include Antebellum and Respect.

Insight Timer is her go-to app when she is feeling stressed; Voxer, which communicates like a walkie- talkie; and MyRadar to be prepared for the weather.
