Joe Norris

Vice president and CIO,
NHRMC

As the chief information officer of New Hanover Regional Medical Center, it’s Joe Norris’ job to find innovative ways technology can be used to support of the hospital’s physicians, clinicians and staff. NHRMC is a teaching hospital, regional referral center and level-two trauma center.

He’s got a busy job, so Norris needs to stay connected and be versatile. “I’m thrilled with my Microsoft Surface Book, which combines the best features of a desktop, laptop and tablet into one device.”

For news, he regularly reads Modern Healthcare to “understand the challenges ahead for the industry” and Gartner research to keep up with technology trends.

Among his favorite sites is Lifehacker, which he says is “great for helping you find simple ways to be more efficient throughout your daily life.” He’s also a fan of the photo blog Where Cool Things Happen, featuring images from around the world related to the human experience, travel and technology.

Looking for a good book? Norris recommends Lincoln on Leadership by Donald T. Phillips. “So many of his principles are still true to this day.”

He calls the Flipboard app on his iPad a huge time-saver. It “allows me to build a very personalized electronic magazine for all of my news and social media feeds into one place.”

So who’s his digital hero? ”I’m really amazed at the results that Tony Hsieh, CEO of Zappos, has been able to accomplish with a truly unique approach to customer service and leading employees.”
