Rumors about the Charlotte Bobcats moving their training camp out of Wilmington have been around for a few weeks, but the news was confirmed April 21. Instead of having the fall training camp at the University of North Carolina Wilmington, the NBA team will be at the Presbyterian Hospital Training Center at Time Warner Cable Arena. The Bobcats held their training camp in Wilmington for the past four years.
“Our past experience at the University of North Carolina Wilmington has been nothing short of extraordinary,” said Fred Whitfield, the chief operating officer for Bobcats Sports and Entertainment.
“But in this difficult economic climate we recognize the overriding importance of managing every expense, and we believe we can prepare for the coming season more efficiently by ... staying here in Charlotte for training camp, without sacrificing any of the competitive advantages we’ve enjoyed in the past.”
This past October was the fourth straight year the team held their training camp in Wilmington. The team usually brought about 40 visitors to the area, including members of the basketball team.
