Tennessee-based HCA Healthcare has acquired five Medac Urgent Care locations in the Wilmington area.

The healthcare system also acquired 12 urgent care clinics in Charleston, Columbia, Myrtle Beach and Spartanburg, South Carolina. The urgent care clinics, including those in Wilmington, were previously owned by Urgent Care Group. Financial terms of the transaction were not disclosed.

“We’re pleased to expand access to convenient, high-quality urgent care in the Wilmington market through the addition of five clinics across New Hanover County,” said Jeff Taylor, chief development officer for HCA Healthcare’s South Atlantic Division, in a news release issued this week.

According to Taylor, the Medac clinics will continue operating under the same name, “ensuring continuity for patients while benefiting from the resources and support of HCA Healthcare’s broader network.” HCA Healthcare took ownership of the local urgent care locations on Monday, according to the clinic's website.

The clinics acquired in Wilmington include the following:

  • CareNow – 2600 New Village Way in Murrayville
  • CareNow – 8115 Market Street, Suite 100, in Porter's Neck
  • CareNow – 1442 Military Cutoff Road
  • CareNow – 4402 Shipyard Boulevard
  • CareNow – 5245 College Road in Monkey Junction

The South Carolina clinics will operate as HCA CareNow clinics. HCA Healthcare’s existing presence in South Carolina includes four acute care hospitals, a behavioral health hospital, over 40 physician practice locations, eight freestanding emergency rooms, 21 urgent care clinics and over 75 care sites.

According to the press release, HCA Healthcare has invested over $800 million across South Carolina in the last five years.

"This investment helps us improve more lives in more ways by expanding access to convenient, high-quality healthcare services in the communities we serve,” said John Lazenby, chief medical officer for HCA Healthcare’s South Atlantic Division, in the release. “Urgent care clinics provide timely care for unexpected, non-emergency medical needs.”

HCA Healthcare is a publicly-traded, for-profit healthcare system with 190 hospitals across 19 states and the United Kingdom, according to its 2025 annual financial report. It owns seven hospitals in North Carolina.

Additionally, the system settled an antitrust lawsuit last August filed by several municipalities in Western North Carolina that alleged HCA Healthcare, which owns Mission Health, engaged in anticompetitive and monopolistic practices, according to court filings.

In 2025, the provider reported net income of $6.7 billion. Its stock, which trades under the ticker HCA on the New York Stock Exchange, was valued at $370.84 as of 10:30 a.m. Friday.
