Novant Health Cuts 160 Jobs Statewide

By Vicky Janowski, posted Oct 5, 2023

Novant Health is cutting 160 jobs across the health system, including some local positions.

The reduction is occurring at its facilities statewide and represents less than 0.5% of Novant’s 36,000 positions across its system, a Novant spokesperson said.

Novant did not say how many of those cuts are coming from its coastal market, which includes Novant Health New Hanover Regional Medical Center, Novant Health Brunswick Medical Center, Novant Health Pender Medical Center and physician offices. “We have no further information to share at this time,” a spokesperson said Thursday.

“Novant Health is making changes across the health system as part of an organizational redesign plan,” according to a statement from the Winston-Salem-based health system. “In a challenging healthcare environment, we are focused on how we can work differently to prioritize direct patient care, operate more efficiently and reimagine how we serve our patients.

“This reduction mainly impacts management and administrative roles,” the statement continued. “We take these decisions very seriously and are grateful for our team members’ service and contributions to our patients and our communities. We are doing everything we can to support them through this transition.”

Earlier this year, Novant cut 50 positions statewide including executive positions. Locally, Philip Brown, who was Novant Health’s chief community impact officer and previously NHRMC’s chief executive physician before the county-owned hospital was sold to Novant in 2021, was among those laid off in January.

“Health care is not immune to the difficult economic realities that many companies are facing across our country right now,” John Gizdic, executive vice president and chief business development officer for Novant and former NHRMC president and CEO, told the Greater Wilmington Business Journal in March when asked about the earlier job cuts. “Many health systems are facing just tremendous economic pressures, and Novant Health is not immune to that, either."
