Wilmington Eye Announces Merger With Intracoastal Eye

By Staff Reports, posted Mar 9, 2022
Wilmington Eye and Intracoastal Eye have merged with the goal of providing comprehensive ophthalmic vision care under a single practice, according to a press release.

The financial terms of the deal were not disclosed, and the merger is effective as of Monday. The merged firm will operate as Wilmington Eye.

Wilmington Eye, which has been operating for 30 years, will be joined by Intracoastal Eye, a locally owned boutique ophthalmology practice in Mayfaire.

The release cites continued growth in Wilmington and the region and desire to meet the demand of the community as motivating factors in the merger.

Dr. Greg Johnson and Dr. Gail Kelley, leading medical providers at Intracoastal Eye, will join Wilmington Eye. All employees will retain their jobs, Wilmington Eye marketing director Miranda Perales said in an email.

Last year, Wilmington Eye named Kathy Erickson as CEO.

“We’re thrilled to have Dr. Johnson and the team at Intracoastal Eye join us. As we look to the future and adapt to the growing needs of the community, bringing on exceptional physicians like Dr. Johnson gives us the ability to better serve our patients,” Christopher Covington, managing partner and ophthalmic surgeon at Wilmington Eye, said in the release.

With this merger, the company now has two corneal specialists, two oculoplastic surgeons, a leading glaucoma specialist and six additional locations. Wilmington Eye currently has offices in Wilmington, Southport, Calabash, Jacksonville, Whiteville, Elizabethtown and Burgaw.

The release said patients will have minimal disturbances during the transition period and.

“Over the years I have worked closely with the physicians and staff of Wilmington Eye, and I know from first-hand experience that we are joining an outstanding organization,” Johnson said in the release.
