Wilmington-based Chiltern Acquires Another Global CRO

By Jenny Callison, posted Sep 16, 2015
A global contract research organization based partially in Wilmington has expanded its scope and reach through the acquisition of another global CRO whose headquarters is in King of Prussia, Pennsylvania.

Chiltern has completed the purchase of Theorem Clinical Research, according to a news release earlier this week. Theorem, with particular strengths in the areas of oncology, biopharma and source (talent recruitment and placement), has more than 30 locations globally, Chiltern spokeswoman Lea Studer said Tuesday.

The companies did not disclose financial terms of the deal.

“By bringing Chiltern and Theorem together, we have created a unique, mid-sized research partner focused on providing exceptional scientific expertise and personal service,” Chiltern CEO Jim Esinhart said in the release. “Clients can expect the same high level of service, now with expanded capabilities. Senior leadership will still be involved in running trials.”

The newly merged company, which will operate under the Chiltern name, now consists of 3,700 employees across 47 countries, with a “much bigger footprint” in Europe, North America and Asia-Pacific, Studer said. Chiltern now has broader therapeutic expertise, with new capabilities in medical device and diagnostics, clinical analytics and clinical supplies, she added.

The merger of the two companies will be a good fit, said Theorem's president and CEO in the August news release announcing the deal.

“Chiltern and Theorem have carved out complementary niches, even across key geographies,” John Potthoff said in the news release announcing the deal. “In key areas, our capabilities will dovetail into current Chiltern operations — this is a mutually beneficial deal.”

Chiltern’s North American headquarters is at 2528 Independence Blvd. in Wilmington. Its global headquarters is in London.
