NHRMC Incorporates New Aneurysm Treatment

By Vicky Janowski, posted Apr 5, 2019
New Hanover Regional Medical Center has begun using a WEB device as a minimally invasive option to repair brain aneurysms, hospital officials recently announced.

The FDA at the end of last year approved the Woven EndoBridge (WEB) Aneurysm Embolization System, which is a mesh ball implant intended to disrupt blood flow entering the aneurysm and help promote clotting.

“This treatment option may be preferable for certain types of aneurysms instead of another endovascular repair option using platinum coils with a stent or the open surgical clipping,” stated a news release from NHRMC.

“The availability of this option has the potential to revolutionize the management of aneurysms throughout the country,” said Vinodh Doss, an interventional neurologist with NHRMC Physician Group-Neurology, who successfully performed the first aneurysm repair using the WEB device in North Carolina.

The device does not require patients to be on blood thinners after the procedure, as they might have to if undergoing the coils and stent route, making it another option for those who have risk factors with blood thinners.

“The latest technique also offers a shorter procedure time because it involves placing a single device instead of multiple coils and one to two stents to hold them in place,” the news release stated.
