Davis Gets Conditional OK To Move Nursing Beds

By Vicky Janowski, posted Feb 19, 2014
The Davis Community officials received state approval Wednesday to move 20 of its skilled nursing facility slots to a residential development under construction near Mayfaire Town Center.

The Davis Community had applied to state regulators for permission to move the 20 beds from its Porters Neck campus, company spokeswoman Julie Rehder said. She said Davis officials received noticed Wednesday that their proposal received conditional approval.

There is a 30-day window for other companies to file an appeal against the decision if they are affected, a Department of Health and Human Services official said Wednesday.

The Davis Community intends to move the beds to Cambridge Village of Wilmington, a $50 million development on Cavalier Drive.

If the application is finalized, Davis would manage the beds and care for the patients in partnership with Cambridge Village. It would be the first time Davis has moved off its main campus, Rehder said earlier this week.

“This is the first time something made sense to us,” said Rehder, who added that Davis also plans to run a senior wellness center and gym at Cambridge.

The Davis Community, which houses a 199-bed skilled nursing facility, Champions Assisted Living, rehabilitation and wellness pavilion on its campus, has undergone its  own construction project that included renovating its skilled nursing facility and building new space. Through the construction shared rooms shifted to private ones, Rehder said.

The shift to private rooms helped free up licensed beds that could move to the Cambridge development, officials said.

The skilled nursing beds would be just one component of the senior apartment community.

Cambridge Village of Wilmington is slated to contain about 240 apartment units when finished, with the first 126 units expected to open in the first quarter of 2015. Officials with Apex-based Cambridge Village Senior Living, the parent company for the Wilmington development, said they plan to target active seniors for residents.

Walking paths and an electric vehicle shuttle are slated to connect the residential community to nearby Mayfaire Town Center, said Mark Wilson, vice president of corporate marketing for Cambridge Village Senior Living.
