Carolina Beach Council May Buy Beach Land From Arcadius Project

By Staff Reports, posted Oct 12, 2009

The Carolina Beach town council will meet on Tuesday, Oct. 13, to discuss the purchase of property for the new North Carolina Aquarium Pier at Carolina Beach. About 2 acres of property located at 309 Carolina Beach Ave. North is being considered for ocean access and parking for the project.

The price of the land, which sits between Canal Drive and the ocean will cost the town $4,075,000. The town plans to pursue all grant and funding opportunities available. But, if none arises, the town may increase taxes by $.015 per $100 dollars of assessed property. That increase would equal an additional $75 in taxes per year on a $500,000 home.

The land under consideration contains parcels that are part of the former Arcadius project, the commercial and residential development proposed in 2004 that would have been Carolina Beach’s largest. On Monday, that project’s conditional use permit expired. In late August, the property was put up for auction as part of bankruptcy proceedings.

The North Carolina Aquarium pier at Carolina Beach will be a family-oriented educational site, which will extend the aquarium’s recreational programs and research. It will be one of three piers managed by the state aquariums.

The other two will be located at Emerald Isle and Nags Head. The piers will educate the public about climate change and how it affects the ocean, said David Griffin, director of the N.C. Aquariums. Wind turbines, hydrogen fuel cells, wave power, and solar panels will be demonstrated at the three piers at Nags Head, Emerald Isle, and Carolina Beach.

The Carolina Beach town council will meet from 6:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. on Tuesday at the Municipal Administration Building - 1121 N. Lake Park Blvd. in Carolina Beach.
