Screen Gems Lands New Projects

By Alison Lee Satake, posted Feb 28, 2011

Today Warner Bros. moved into offices at EUE Screen Gems Studios to begin work on a new television pilot called Hart of Dixie. It will begin filming the pilot for the CW during the week of March 28.

It is the seventh project currently employing local film professionals at the studios.

The flurry of film work is at a level that CEO Bill Vassar has not seen in his 12 years here.

“[Film companies] already knew we were a great place to shoot because of the infrastructure, crew and town, but it hadn’t worked out budget-wise [previously]. When the state came up with the new program, it made us very attractive. It was the lynch pin,” Vassar said.

Effective on Jan. 1, the North Carolina film tax credit increased to 25 percent of qualified local spending, no longer subject to state income tax and the feature film cap rose to $20 million, according to The Essential Guide to U.S. and International Production Incentives produced by Entertainment Partners.

Two projects, one movie and one for tv, are wrapping up this week: Journey 2: The Mysterious Island and Comedy Central’s Playing with Guns.

And, two new projects moved in last week. Revenge, an ABC studios pilot, opened offices on the lot and plans to begin shooting the week of March 21. It is the first time the film company has shot in Wilmington. However, Screen Gems has worked with the company on Army Wives, which is filmed in Charleston.

Another new tenant is the film Hick, produced by Jon Cornick and Steven Martini of Bolden! They plan to begin filming around March 28.

ABC Cable Group’s made-for-tv movie, Teen Spirit, currently is in production and One Tree Hill will finish shooting its eighth season the week of March 14. The long-running television series is still waiting to hear if it has the go-ahead for another season.

“We started to have an increase in interest as we got the word out at the end of last summer,” Vassar said. He expects another project to set up shop here in May, but could not provide details.
