CFCC Launches Startup Accelerator With Pitch Funding Up To $4K

By Cierra Noffke, posted Apr 14, 2026
Cape Fear Community College is launching a startup program with Bank OZK.

The Startup Acceleration & Idea Launch (SAIL) program, presented by CFCC's Small Business Center, is a 10-week training program that culminates in a pitch competition offering up to $4,000 in funding, according to a news release. The program is intended for first-time founders who have developed their business ideas in the past six months and have not yet started generating income, the release stated.

“Starting a business can be challenging, but programs like SAIL provide the structure and support entrepreneurs need to succeed," said Jerry Coleman, director of CFCC’s Small Business Center, in the release. “We are committed to equipping individuals with the tools, knowledge and confidence to build strong, resilient businesses.”

The program will run starting Aug. 20 through Oct. 29, with weekly virtual sessions from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. The program is free, although enrollment is limited to 15 participants, the release stated. Additionally, enrollment is open to residents of New Hanover and Pender counties.

The final pitch competition, scheduled for Oct. 29, will award winning participants with startup capital – $4,000 for first place, $2,500 for second place and $1,500 for third place, the release stated.

According to the SAIL program website, the funds will be administered through CFCC's Small Business Center to cover approved startup expenses, including legal costs, business structure, accounting, marketing, product development and sales infrastructure.

The program instructor, Cherith Roberson, previously served as the director of Wake Technical Community College's Small Business Center and is the owner of Flourish in Growth, a small business counseling firm.

The weekly instruction topics include discussions on revenue modeling, marketing, branding and legal structures, among others. Participants will also complete a one-on-one counseling session with Coleman, according to the website.

The deadline to apply to the program is July 27 at 11:59 p.m. Applicants will receive a decision by Aug. 3, according to the website.
