Wilmington-based Alcami has entered into a definitive agreement to acquire a global packaging company, marking the company’s first expansion into Europe.
According to a press release, the contract development and manufacturing organization has made plans to acquire Tjoapack, a Netherlands-headquartered contract packing organization with operations in Tennessee and Etten-Leur, Netherlands.
“This acquisition marks our first European expansion, which is an essential element of our investment strategy to expand our presence in the global market,” said Patrick Walsh, Alcami’s CEO and board chair. “Furthermore, this increased scale aligns with our growth and expansion in pharmaceutical testing lab services, drug product manufacturing and pharma storage service offerings at Alcami.”
The financial terms of the agreement were not disclosed, and the acquisition is expected to close by the end of the second quarter, in June, according to the release.
Last year, Tjoapack announced plans to build a 170,000-square-foot facility in Clinton, Tennessee, where it operates. The project is slated for completion in 2027. The company has 23 packaging lines and over 400 employees, the release stated.
According to the release, Tjoapack is majority owned by Ampersand Capital Partners, a private equity health care firm headquartered in Boston.
Alcami operates 770,000 square feet of space across the United States, with over 1,000 employees and six locations in North and South Carolina, New England, St. Louis and Reno, Nevada, the company's website states.
The acquisition will expand Alcami’s packaging and labeling services in Europe and give existing Tjoapack clients access to Alcami’s services, which include pharmaceutical testing labs, sterile and oral solid-dose drug product manufacturing and GMP pharma storage, according to the release.
“This transaction represents an important next chapter for Tjoapack,” said Dexter Tjoa, CEO of Tjoapack, in the release. “Together, we create a more integrated transatlantic platform that enables us to support our partners more effectively as they scale and expand globally.”
Alcami most recently expanded westward with its 2024 acquisition of Pacific Pharmaceutical Services, a Nevada-based warehousing provider.
Additionally, the company opened a 65,000-square-foot facility in Garner in 2024 and, in January, acquired a 37,000-square-foot facility in Durham for $6.7 million, according to a release.
